Mandalong Wetlands - with threatened species of paperbark tree - melaluca biconvexa

Mandalong is a small rural community located near the the town of Morisset and Lake Macquarie, the largest salt water lake in Australia.   It is situated close to the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway and the Watagan Mountains.

Mandalong Paperbark Forest - Moran's Creek
It was settled by Europeans in 1852 or earlier. Early industries were farming and timber working.   An aboriginal camp existed in Mandalong in the 1860s.

Today Mandalong is a quiet rural area with most of the rural properties between 10 and 50 hectares, some in traditional farming land but many in environmentally protected areas.

There are at least seven Endangered Ecological Communities (EECs) in Mandalong which include Freshwater Wetlands and Paperbark Forests.  Information on Mandalong's beautiful flora and fauna can be found here on our website.

We have a population of 417 (2006 census).  The neighbouring suburb of Morisset has a commerical centre and railway station.  There are excellent facilities in the coastal strip of the Hunter and Central Coast regions.

The Mandalong Community Association is our Mandalong community group. It has a proud history protecting the interests of the community. You will find full details of our meetings here.  We also organise community social events.   Mandalong has an active Mining Subcommittee which works to address issues the community raises regarding longwall mining by Centennial Coal in the area.

There is a diversity of community activities in Mandalong.  Our website provides information on activities and contact details.  Our community interest groups include the Rural Bushfire Service, the Film Club and the Book Club.    Interests amongst the Mandalong community include  bushwalking, environment conservation, cycling and mountain bike riding, horse riding, bird-watching, wine appreciation and gardening.

If you are new to the area and you'd like to discover more about any of the community interest groups, please contact us.  You will find Mandalong is a friendly and welcoming community.
